It is frustrating when fresh food goes bad before you can eat it. You lose money, and you lose good food. This is a very common problem. In my practice, I often talk to people who feel stuck in this cycle of buying and tossing.
However, there are simple tricks to make your groceries last much longer. By using these tips, you can save cash and waste less.
Plan Your Plate
One of the main reasons we waste food—and money—is a lack of planning. If you shop without a plan, you might buy things you do not need.
Check Inventory: Before you make a shopping list, look in your fridge and pantry. See what needs to be eaten soon. This stops you from buying doubles of things you already have.(1)
Map Your Meals: Write down a rough plan for the week. If you know you are making chicken on Tuesday, you will buy the right amount. This simple step cuts down on waste.
Smart Storage Secrets
How you store your food changes how long it stays fresh. Think of your kitchen as having different "homes" for different foods.
Vegetables: Most veggies, like broccoli and carrots, like the fridge. Keep them in containers or bags. However, potatoes and onions prefer a cool, dark pantry.$^2$
Fruits: Apples and berries last longer in the fridge. Bananas and tomatoes should ripen on the counter first. Once they are ripe, you can move them to the fridge to keep them fresh longer.(2)
Bread: Bread goes stale quickly at room temperature. Keep it sealed. If you will not eat it all in a few days, put it in the freezer. You can toast slices directly from frozen.
Give Food a Second Life
Even with a plan, you might have leftovers. Do not throw them out—give them a second chance.
Leftover Makeover: Cooked food is usually safe in the fridge for three to four days.(3) Get creative with it. Turn roasted chicken into chicken salad, or turn plain rice into fried rice.
The Freezer: The freezer is a great tool. You can freeze cooked meals, soup, bread, and even milk. Use freezer-safe bags to stop "freezer burn," and write the date on the bag so you know how old it is.(3)
Save Scraps: Save peels from carrots or onions in a bag in the freezer. When the bag is full, boil them to make vegetable broth.
The Bottom Line
Making food last longer saves you money and respects the resources used to grow it. Start today with two simple steps: check your fridge before you shop, and make a quick plan for dinner tonight.
